XPRESS SPEAKER DIY-1

XPRESS DIY-1

Renaissance Ahoy!

Isn't that a wake-up call ?? Sure it is!!

This blog, started sometime back chiefly to fire up the enthusiasm of rookie young hobbyists with simple and 'FAST' projects that could be accomplished by virtually any interested individual with a modicum of skills or a minimum of tools, has now elected to assume a new avatar. The target audience is the young  (and young at heart!) audio DIY experimenter who has till now steered clear of that royal waster of time -- speaker building.

Speaker DIY as most of us know and accept, is more a black art than science, though various greats and gurus have attempted sincerely to impart a scientific temper to design approaches.

As the name suggests, here the focus is on Xpress or speed DIY. Quick actions leading to quick results so that experiments need not wait too much in the queue. To meet that need for speed, build concepts and approaches have been simplified, if not over-simplified at times. As for costs, they have been kept at the minimum so that nobody would "feel the pinch" while trying out various alternatives in design and implementation.

The major inspiration for such an unconventional effort was the "quick & dirty" ... no, no, no, ... the "quick and fancy" techniques and approaches of people like XRK (diyaudio). My earnest debt to XRK and others is hereby acknowledged with much gratitude.

Rather than opt for a mechanical "build-by-dots" approach, I have seen it fit to explore the selected design in some historic and other detail so that the builder will have a clearer/fuller picture of what s/he is setting out to achieve. Also, the background material hopefully shall give the builder a firmer understanding of the basics of design and operation, thus enabling any future "fine tuning" by the builder before s/he takes up a "pucca" build. Kindly be patient with that approach. I am sure eventually most of you will agree that such a choice was the one you would have selected, had you been given a choice.

So here goes! We shall attempt a series of simple, 'Xpress' projects that ought to interest and provide value for the average hobbyist. Here the stress will be on 'Xpress' implementation of the project, with the concomitant need for simplification; more in-depth exploration will be aided by relevant Web links, which could be explored at leisure on a personal level. My job I believe is to light the fuse of DIY enthusiasm and spirit.

Hope this triggers some renewed enthusiasm! And enthusiasm is something that works both ways!!
